Hey there, thanks for stopping by! I’m Kristina, the clinician and writer behind South of Vanilla. My path to holistic wellness and nutrition has been unconventional at best, which is probably exactly why you are here too.
I am a first and foremost a Speech-Language Pathologist and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, which at first may seem like a strange combination, but both of these loves combine the passion I have always had for healthcare. My niche area in both fields has always been cognition (aka the complex brain processes behind thinking and decision making). My role as an SLP is conventional, and my role as an NTP is holistic, which gives me unique insight into healthcare, especially as more and more turn towards wellness strategies that really work to optimize wellness.
I started South of Vanilla back in 2014 after exploring alternative diets and holistic lifestyle changes for myself in 2013. I’ve had such incredible results from a holistic, whole-foods based diet; I’ve healed my own chronic kidney infections, chronic fatigue, adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues, cystic acne, and severe digestive discomforts. Everyone should be able to heal themselves holistically if they are motivated to do so. I truly believe that that body has an innate wisdom geared towards healing.
South of Vanilla is named after my parents: my mom always used copious amount of vanilla while baking, and my dad’s culinary talents are a direct result of his southern heritage. South of Vanilla originally started as a paleo food blog, and the name has stuck, even though I now take a much wider perspective of real, whole foods.
My naturally creative spirit led me to start blogging. How wonderful is it to have a place to create, write, talk about cooking, food, and wellness all in once place? I think so too, obviously.
Besides running South of Vanilla, I have a true passion for traveling, binge watching Netflix, roadtrips in my FIAT, specialty coffee, and reading. (Anyone have any good book recommendations?!) I also teach and have a serious love for Pure Barre, have followed a yoga practice for the past 15 years, and have a hot and cold relationship with running.
